Stephen Stills: Carry On (Rhino, 2013)


Dopo Voyage di David Crosby e Reflections di Graham Nash, il box set di Stephen Stills chiude la trilogia antologica del gruppo, proponendo il repertorio essenziale in edizione rimasterizzata e con un contorno di materiale inedito. Curato da Stills, Nash e Joel Bernstein (fotografo e archivista di CSN e Neil Young), Carry On si compone di ben 4 cd, dato che Stills è stato il più produttivo dei tre musicisti: al sodalizio CSN(&Y) si aggiungono infatti la sua carriera solista ed alcuni altri progetti (in particolare i Manassas).
La metà del box si compone del materiale fino al 1973, il resto copre tutti gli anni successivi, ma pochi brani rappresentano la sua produzione più recente.
I neofiti o i nostalgici si troveranno bene nell'avere una grande antologia con il meglio di Stills, sia come solista sia come parte di Crosby Stills Nash (& Young), dove riascoltare con una qualità sonora superlativa i classici degli anni 60 e 70, come "For What It's Worth", "Helplessly Hoping", "Dark Star". I cultori invece sguazzeranno nelle rarità, dosate con parsimonia (come negli altri box) ma comunque interessanti: la prima incisione di Stills 17enne, "Travelin'", la demo di "49 Reasons", la "No Name Jam" con Jimi Hendrix, l'originale "Black Coral" con le voci di CSN&Y, ed altre canzoni e/o versioni inedite.
Il libro allegato contiene articoli biografici e i credits delle canzoni, oltre a foto inedite. Consigliatissimo.

Neil Young, il cuore di un hippie - L'intervista del L.A. Times su World Record e Harvest Time

Poco dopo le 11, il vecchietto arriva con qualche minuto di ritardo e sorride chiedendo qualche minuto in più: "Ho degli huevos in arrivo", spiega. Poi si avvicina al pianoforte nell'angolo della sala. Non appena le sue mani toccano i tasti, la melodia che riempie la stanza è spezzata, giocosa, bella, inconfondibilmente sua, come se stesse firmando il suo nome su una lavagna: Neil Young è nell'edificio. Quell'edificio è lo studio Shangri-La di Rick Rubin, in cima a una collina che domina Zuma Beach. Oggi Neil Young indossa flanella scura, jeans grigio scuro e comode scarpe da ginnastica da passeggio, e un cappello nero sui suoi lunghi e fini capelli grigi. La spilla nella fascia del cappello dice "CANADA". Ha l'odore di uno che ha in tasca parte di uno spinello. Neil Young from Worst to Best: la classifica di Stereogum

Vi presentiamo una curiosa classifica: gli album di Neil Young dal peggiore al migliore secondo Stereogum.com 35. LIVING WITH WAR Questo album vede il nostro eroe in versione hippie, come nell'altrettanto politico Greendale, che trasuda passione istantanea; c'è persino una canzone intitolata "Let's Impeach The President". L'EPICO ARCHIVES III ABBRACCIA CAOS, TRASCENDENZA E DISTORSIONE (MOJO)

A metà di Across The Water - il nuovo documentario di due ore sulle tournée in Giappone e Regno Unito del 1976 di Neil Young e i Crazy Horse, che apre la parte visiva del suo gigantesco terzo cofanetto d'archivio - il cantante viene intervistato a cena nel suo hotel di Londra. Alla domanda su come vuole essere ricordato dopo la sua morte, Young, allora trentenne, scherza su una possibile lapide: “È morto cercando un cuore d'oro!” Poi il suo umore cambia. “Vorrei che la gente sapesse che sono stato qui. Ho trascorso il primo quarto della mia vita cercando di lasciare un segno... Vorrei lasciare dietro di me qualcosa con un punto di vista”. Stephen Stills: un excursus nei suoi primi anni e il ricordo di Crosby (Independent, 2023)

Nell'agosto del 1971, Stephen Stills arrivò a Berkeley per le date conclusive del suo primo tour da solista e, a sorpresa, gli fece visita David Crosby. Solo un anno prima il pionieristico supergruppo folk-rock Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young era imploso in una bufera di alcol, cocaina, ego e triangoli amorosi. Quella sera, tuttavia, non ci fu alcun rancore. "Venne a trovarmi nel camerino prima dello spettacolo", ricorda Stills, che invitò prontamente il suo vecchio amico a unirsi a lui sul palco. "Gli dissi: facciamo The Lee Shore, e lui disse, va bene! Non l'abbiamo provata tante volte, e si vede, ma è così che andava all'epoca. Era fantastico".
