"Credo che non riuscirò mai a dimenticarmi di questo fatto: mi sa che erano Peter Buck dei R.E.M. e Neil Young e stavano parlando di musica e dell'amore che nutrono verso il vinile e il suono analogico confrontato con quello digitale e, che peccato, l'industria (indica i membri del pubblico) lo mise da parte. Um, e poi disse qualcosa tipo 'Quella gente al Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame farebbe meglio a pensarci 2 volte prima di farmici entrare perchè se anch'io finirò su quel podio davanti a quella gente, ne avrò da dire.' Quindi spero che Neil sia energico stasera e, visto che siamo in tema di energicità, quei simpaticoni che hanno preparato le tavole hanno messo il nostro tavolo vicino a quello del TicketMaster lassù, quindi mi sa che per la fine della sera faremo una lotta a base di cibo...e consiglierei alla gente di classe come Lou Reed e Laurie Anderson, che son lassù, di sgombrare o , perchè no, di unirsi a noi. "Stavo parlando con Joel Bernstein che è un amico di Neil, un compagno e un collaboratore che stava catalogando i nastri di Neil per un box set... C'erano nastri a 8,16 e 24 tracce e c'erano anche cassette... Ce n'erano tipo un migliaio. E gli chiesi se erano titolati e lui disse, 'Sì, si chiamano "Mercoledì Notte" e "Jam mattutina in Si"' . E dopo aver finito il lavoro Joel iniziò a catalogarli a seconda delle canzoni, tipo le 40 migliori versioni di 'Tonight's the Night' e le 65 di 'Cortez the Killer' e Neil ed io eravamo là in questa stanza e io pensavo che forse lui ne avrebbe tirato giù una e l'avremmo suonata. Si guardò intorno e disse 'Devo venirne fuori'. Ho visto un uomo sommerso dalla sua quantità di lavoro.
"Um, a proposito, Stone Gossard [dei Pearl Jam,nda]...lui ha detto che un amico di Neil, Lonnie, chiama la sua musica 'funk da montagana.' Era il 're del funk da montagna'. Credo che questo sia bello
"Ci ha insegnato tanto come band sulla dignità e l'impegno di suonare e quando sento le presentazioni di gente come Janis Joplin e Frank Zappa [che son morti,nda], penso che sia una fortuna che ce l'abbiamo ancora qui. It was, uh, I think it was Peter Buck from R.E.M. and Neil Young and they were doing an interview and they were talking about music and talking about their love of vinyl and the analog sound compared to the digital sound and uh what a shame it was the industry (points at audience members) kind of pushed it aside. Um, and then he went on to say something like 'Those people at the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame better think twice about inducting me 'cause if I get that podium in front of those people, I'm gonna have a lot to say.' And I asked, you know, were they labeled? And he said, 'Yeah, they were labeled. They were labeled Wednesday night, Monday morning jam in B.' And after it was all done, I think Joel ended up cataloging them by songs like the 40 best versions of 'Tonight's the Night' and the 65 best versions of 'Cortez the Killer' and Neil and I were standing in this room and we were looking at all these and I thought he was maybe gonna take one down and we were gonna play it. He looked around and he said, 'I gotta get outta here.' I saw a man overwhelmed by his body of work.
"Um, on the way over, Stone Gossard...he said a friend, Lonnie, called Neil's music, uh, 'mountain funk.' He was the 'king of mountain funk.' I thought that was pretty cool.
"He's taught us a lot as a band about dignity and commitment and playing in the moment and when I hear, you know, the speeches and inducting Janis Joplin and Frank Zappa, I get, uh, I'm just really glad he's still here. And I'm gonna (audience applauds; Eddie rolls his eyes, smiles and clutches his hand to his heart)... yeah!! And I think I'm gonna have to say that I don't know if there's been another artist that has been inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame to commemorate a career that is still as vital as he is today. Some of his best songs were on his last record.
